exploding kittens

I worked as the Marketing Art Director at Exploding Kittens, which was one of the most creatively rewarding jobs of my career. The company was founded and partially run by an artist, which really opened up doors for me. This allowed me to explore areas that I hadn’t delved into much before, such as copywriting, animation, scriptwriting, and directing video shoots.

Exploding kittens: The zine

The Exploding Kittens Zine was a passion project for a few of us. It was offered as a gift with purchase to incentivize direct-to-consumer (DTC) purchases. Although it was planned to be an ongoing collectible series, production costs made it unfeasible to continue.

The mini-zine included several well-performing social media posts, original puzzles, games, and comics.

Recipes for disaster promo video

The promo video for Recipes for Disaster by Exploding Kittens was the first video that I storyboarded, wrote, and animated myself. I will never understand why they trusted me with this, but it was certainly enjoyable.

Hand-to-hand wombat kickstarter

Together with our Social Media Manager, Erica Sabol, Cartoonist David Kantrowitz, and our CEO, Elan Lee, we developed a Kickstarter campaign to promote and raise funds for the game Hand-To-Hand Wombat.

Throughout the campaign, we required new supporting artwork on a daily basis. This included live stream overlays, 22 campaign updates, cute campaign challenges, blog posts, social media updates, new tier unlocks, "choose your own adventure" IG stories, print materials, custom sound effects, live-camera filming/editing, animation, and more. It was… a lot

netflix’s ek mobile promo video

I collaborated with our internal Digital Team, the external Dev Team, and Netflix Games' Marketing Team to create a 30-second promotional video for the Netflix exclusive mobile game version of Exploding Kittens. The new version features new cards, mechanics, animations, and polishing compared to the existing EK Mobile game.

Netflix liked the video so much that they started using it in their own promotions for the game as opposed to their original plan of making one themselves.

organic social posts

We aimed to create content that people would appreciate and enjoy seeing on their social media feeds. With so many brands on social media, we wanted to offer something unique through education. To achieve this, we categorized our content into topics such as "Your New Favorite Animal" and "Space is Terrifying," and developed comic-style infographics for each category.

When it came to promoting our games, we integrated them into this strategy by creating clever and educational comics that related to the new game's mechanics.

CRM emails

I was responsible for creating emails for every game release, sale, teaser, significant moment, and general thought. Due to our small team, I also handled most of the copywriting, as my sense of humor matched the company's. This is why I often included my dog in many of the emails.

After we hired a CRM manager, I worked closely with them to adjust and improve our emails based on what we learned from previous ones. As a result, we started A/B testing our emails, and our subscription numbers soared.
